Best Roofing Materials for Texas Weather
Texas heat, hail, and wind beat up roofs faster than almost anywhere else. Here's how the major materials actually perform.
Choosing a roofing material in Texas is a balance of upfront cost, lifespan, hail resistance, energy performance, and curb appeal. Here's how the major systems actually perform in DFW.
Architectural Asphalt Shingles
The most popular DFW roofing material — and for good reason. 25-30 year lifespan, solid hail performance, wide color selection, and the lowest upfront cost of any quality system. GAF Timberline HDZ and Owens Corning Duration are the two biggest names.

Class 4 Impact-Resistant Shingles
Class 4 shingles pass UL 2218 hail impact testing and often unlock 10-30% off your wind/hail insurance premium. They cost roughly 10-20% more than standard architectural shingles but pay back through reduced insurance and longer life. Strong DFW choice.
Standing Seam Metal
40-70 year lifespan, the highest hail resistance of any common material, and outstanding energy performance with Kynar 500 reflective finishes. Higher upfront cost ($16-$25 per sq ft installed) but lowest lifetime cost. Excellent for premium homes and modern designs.
Stone-Coated Steel
The look of slate or cedar shake with the durability of steel. 50+ year warranty, very high hail and wind resistance, and lighter weight than concrete tile — meaning no structural reinforcement is usually required.
Concrete and Clay Tile
50+ year lifespan, premium curb appeal, and excellent for Mediterranean or Spanish-style homes. Heavy weight may require structural reinforcement on older homes. Higher upfront cost.
What We Don't Recommend
3-tab asphalt shingles. They're cheap upfront but fail Class 4 testing, lose granules quickly under Texas UV, and are increasingly hard to insure. Skip them and go architectural at minimum.
