8 Signs Your Roof Has Storm Damage
Storm damage isn't always obvious from the ground. Here are eight visible signs that you need a roof inspection.
After a DFW storm, most roof damage isn't visible from the front yard. But there are eight ground-level signs that should trigger a free professional roof inspection.
1. Dented Gutters or Downspouts
Hail that bruises shingles also dents soft aluminum gutters. If your gutters look pockmarked, your roof almost certainly took hits too.
2. Granules in Downspouts
When you check or clean your downspouts and find a pile of black granules at the bottom, your shingles are losing their protective top layer. Hail accelerates this dramatically.
3. Dented Soft Metal Vents and Caps
Roof vents, turbines, and pipe boot caps are made of soft metal. Visible dents on any of them are reliable evidence that hail hit the roof itself.
4. Pockmarks on AC Fins
Walk over to your outdoor AC unit and look at the aluminum fins around the coil. Hail bends them. If they're pockmarked, your roof was hit.
5. Missing Shingles
Wind events lift and tear shingles. Even one or two missing shingles means underlying damage may extend to seals and adjacent shingles too.
6. Lifted or Curled Ridge Caps
Ridge cap shingles run along the peak of the roof. If they're lifting or curling, wind has damaged the seal — and water is finding a path in.
7. Interior Leaks or Ceiling Stains
Any new leak, water stain, or wet insulation after a storm is direct evidence that the roof has been compromised.
8. Damaged Fence Boards or Siding
If wind or hail damaged the fence and siding, the roof took more than its share too. Most insurance scopes cover the full exterior together.
